Date (2000) Senate Events
April 5 Bill S-20, the Tobacco Youth Protection Act, is introduced in the Senate and receives first reading.  A news conference shows strong support for the bill in the health community.
May 9 Bill S-20 is referred to the Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment, and Natural Resources.
June 6 Bill S-20 Committee Hearings commence.
June 8 The presidents of three tobacco companies are summoned to give testimony to the Senate committee.  Two out of the three companies give their unconditional support to Bill S-20.
June 13 The testimony of witness panels before the committee continue.
June 15 Witness panel testimony and wrap-up.
June 29 Senate rises and will resume in the Fall.
October 22, 2000 Disillusion of Parliament.
2001 Senate Events
January 29 Opening of the 37th Parliament.                                     
February 7 Bill S-15, The Tobacco Youth Protection Act, is introduced in the Senate and receives first reading.
March 1 Bill S-15, The Tobacco Youth Protection Act receives Second Reading, and is referred to the Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources.                                       
April 23-27 The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources holds cross country hearings to gather information on Bill S-15.
May 15 Third Reading of Bill S-15.  Following Third Reading the Senate passed Bill S-15, the Bill has now moved out of the Senate and onto the House of Commons.                               
June 12 S-15 is ruled procedurally invalid by House of Commons Speaker Peter Milliken.
